CURING a hangover could be as fun as fuelling one….
Figures show that two million of us will take time off work because we’re suffering after hitting the booze too hard. But a spot of post-binge nookie could be just one way to help you battle through the pain. Here we asks celebs and health experts for their top hangover cures…
WATER… TELLY star Amy Childs, 25, says: “Drinking lots of water is the best way to deal with a hangover.” Too much booze can certainly leave you feeling dehydrated, contributing to a pounding headache. But while rehydrating might be good for you physically, Dutch researchers say there is actually little evidence that drinking lots of water the morning after will relieve pain. Rating: ★★
FIZZY DRINKS… According to GP Julian Spinks, the best way to replace lost fl uids is with “sugary and sports drinks”. A drink like Gatorade, for example, will help restore levels of electrolytes – salts and minerals – lost during boozing. Rating: ★★★★
JUICE… The sugars in juice can help replace glucose levels, while Australian researchers have discovered that drinking pear juice can reduce the effects of a hangover – but only if you gulp it the night before. Rating: ★★★
SOUP… Researchers in the US say that a beef and noodle broth may provide the perfect combination of nutrients to battle hangovers. Dr Julian Spinks says: “Food is a good idea but light vegetable soups may be easier to stomach.” Rating: ★★★★
COFFEE… A favourite of X Factor judge Nick Grimshaw. A study from Temple University, Philadelphia, found that caffeine can tackle the tiredness associated with a hangover but really only covers up the effects of the night before. However, US scientist Professor Michael Oshinsky suggests that a combination of caffeine and anti-inflammatories can relieve headaches. Rating: ★★
BACON & EGGS… TV chef Jamie Oliver, 40, recommends “a double portion of eggs and bacon”. Scientists say that there’s some evidence that it works as both bacon and eggs contain amino acids that help break down some of the substances in the body produced by drinking too much. Adding some toast will help restore blood sugar levels. Rating: ★★
SEX… Having a romp could zap the pain of a hangover. Scientists at the University of Munster in Germany, found that 60% of migraine patients and 36% of men and women with cluster headaches had an improvement in symptoms when they had sex. It’s thought that nookie helps our bodies release endorphins and the feel-good hormone oxytocin which act as painkillers. A gentle workout will help you sweat out toxins too! Rating: ★★★★
HAIR OF THE DOG… Booze experts say that having another drink may give some relief from a hangover because it increases feelings of pleasure in the brain. However, you’ll just be delaying the symptoms until later and doing your body more harm. Rating: ★
